What we do

The UK needs China-literate people. Engage with China (EwC) fills this knowledge gap through its various initiatives. We work in schools enabling pupils – and their staff – to build cultural understanding, a global mindset and access an enriching cultural experience in the heart of the classroom. By delivering fresh knowledge through interactive learning we help to shape the leaders of tomorrow by equipping them with a vital understanding of China and its impact.

Our main initiatives include

BOOSTING ATTAINMENT & CHANGING LIVES

Research shows that enabling pupils to have a global experience – even in the classroom – improves attainment & future life choices. Our China Challenge Days’ are interactive and designed to nurture knowledge by enabling cultural insights, role-play, mandarin language and calligraphy. The days expand horizons to learn about a nation which has a 5,000-year history, has successfully lifted 900 million people out of poverty since the 1980s and accomplished various moon and space missions in recent years. Our initiatives encourage aspiration & enable social mobility.

“As Headteacher, it is my mission to nurture knowledge, wisdom, and understanding of the world beyond our doorstep. The interactive learning opportunities created by Engage with Chian were so meaningful. Our pupils were able to step outside their everyday world and immerse themselves in another culture. The lessons were vibrant and hands-on. Please come back!”

– Amanda Cope, Head, St Catherine’s CofE Primary School

OUR IMPACT
Every year EwC teaches thousands of young people in the UK about China across all the key educational stages. Our initiatives expand horizons, enable a personal discovery of China (including its history, geography, culture and economic development) and enrich and support overall curriculum learning. What’s more, EwC is building a crucial pipeline of young people with the skills and knowledge to thrive in a changing world.

Our annual Good Cop Bad Cop MUN conference has become a regular calendar fixture for many schools around the world. Providing a global, online debating platform for 15–18-year-olds involving 400 pupils from 30 schools in 15+ countries, it is always themed around climate change and based largely on resolutions from the latest international COP conference. Good Cop Bad Cop provides a powerful, dynamic and real-time experience to negotiate with peers, build empathy and inspire to be innovators, change-makers and solution-finders. Many want to discover more about the world, particularly China, as a result of their participation. We are always amazed at the high calibre of debate, how much young people are capable of and how passionate they can be.

Our Engage with China Scholarships in China have enabled a full cultural immersion for 35 fortunate young British pupils on a unique educational journey to study their A-levels. This opportunity is unique and life-changing, creating cultural ambassadors and opening doors for their future in terms of next educational steps and global employability.
