What We Do

The UK needs China-literate people. Engage with China fills this knowledge gap through its various initiatives. We work in schools enabling pupils – and staff – to build cultural understanding and a global mindset and access an enriching cultural experience. We hope that by delivering key learning outcomes for the leaders of tomorrow we are equipping them to understand China better today and throughout their lives.

Engage with China (EwC) is an educational charity, founded in 2018. To date we have brought China alive in the classroom to more than 5,500 pupils across all the key learning stages, from Primary to 6th form.

We know from our experience that pupils’ imaginations and creativity are unleashed as they engage with rich, fresh knowledge. Added value to their learnings comes through making connections across multiple curriculum subjects. We hope that, by discovering China for themselves, pupils will become better cross-cultural collaborators of the future, equipped for the global jobs market and able to negotiate on crucial subjects like climate change.

Research shows that enabling pupils to have a global experience – even in the classroom – improves attainment & future life choices. Our ‘China Challenge Days’ are interactive and designed to nurture knowledge by enabling cultural insights, role-play, mandarin language and calligraphy. The days expand horizons to learn about a nation which has a 5,000-year history, has successfully lifted 900 million people out of poverty since the 1980s and accomplished various moon and space missions in recent years and encourages aspiration & social mobility.

Every year Engage with China (EwC) teaches thousands of young people across the key educational stages about China. Our initiatives expand horizons, enable a personal discovery of China (including its history, geography, culture and economic development) and enrich and support overall curriculum learning. What’s more, EwC is building a crucial pipeline of young people with the skills and knowledge to thrive in a shifting world.

Numerous reports including from government departments, educational policy institutes and trade bodies confirm that a lack of China-related skills is depriving the UK of knowledge, restricting economic growth and limiting necessary diplomatic and cross-cultural skills.

Founded in 2018, Engage with China (EwC) is a UK-registered educational charity. Our aim is to build a ‘China-literate’ generation in UK schools, by developing competitive edge, relevant 21st century skills, global awareness and curiosity through the case study of China. We know from our experience working with pupils that imaginations and creativity are unleashed as they engage with rich, fresh knowledge and learn about this re-emerging superpower.
